MY First Working Day!

Hey! You guys know the Huan-sao lobang that she introduced at the emniclaur 21st?

Haha, after an interview, an initial training, and yet another training, my first work assignments starts today!!

At stef's now, and its raining monkeys out the window now, with the silence of everyone mugging for exams and the sounds of rain pattering on the window all around. Yes, you are right to be impressed with how I even managed to stay awake. And you ought to, since my official bio clock now states that I shall sleep from 5AM to 1PM each day.

Will be heading to ACJC after this blog, and glad that its pretty near NUS. But how, I'll be tasked with the job of getting ACJC Year 2 Arts Students to play hula hoops and a seemingly-copied-from-kindergarten shaking hands and hugging game. Bah. This is going to be so much like O2. Heh.

And the rain.. showing no signs of stopping. Nevertheless, I'd still have to brave it all for the sake of $36 today.

Floorball today!

Heh since Pearlyn has complained that she's not gonna read my blog anymore till she gets something that she actually understands, I've refrained from geek talk.

And its so shiok, right now, to step out of the hot shower, after a good morning and afternoon of floorball, sit in an air conditioned room and just rest.. What happiness.

I've been slacking the whole month away, planting my butt in this green swivel chair of mind that it almost grew roots. And in the process turning snow white, and feeling darn sick generally. Finally a good sprints here and there to revitalise my body. Wahoo! Nevertheless I lost feeling in both my purple big toes. One tip: Never play floorbal in shoes one size too small. Glad the nails didnt come off.

Then was the usual 19th protocol. Move, stop, talk. Move, stop, talk. The topic in debate today was the general elections. Honestly speaking, I know nutz bout politics. I'm the epitome of the totally (ah crap.. my vocab!! what's that word I wanna use. Typing has ceased now while I think of the word) yes. the apathetic young Singporean. But still, listening to Ben, Ervin, Pearl and Cheng talk about it was pretty enlightening. Esp. the guy who was exiled to Sentosa.. Haha.. never knew Singapore even had exiles.. and of all places Sentosa.

To state my own view after listening to them, as Emma had mentioned, I'd rather a benevolent dictatorship then a split coalition, but ya, "dictatorship" is a strong word, but you get my point. And I disagree with Cheng's view that why change if things are fine now? I believe we have to have a fail-safe, in this case, an opposition, in case shit happens. Things may be fine now and we happily give one party all the power, but the wellness of the state then depends solely on the quality of the people leading it. If some ass gets into power, we're screwed through, with no backup avenue of keeping him/them in check.

I think that is the point Ervin and Pearl was trying to make. Of course, Pearl, with all her extra knowledge is more negative about the ruling party than us.

Well, we'll all see if we change our views about: "Hey, we're ok with not being able to exercise our freedom" when shit happens to us next time and we realise we're screwed.

Right now its gonna be WoW, and tomorrow I shall blog about the FF's going-to-be amazing Turtle Soup Adventure.

Sweet.

The Jarring Sound of Silence

Now I can fully understand the meaning of the above title.

As usual, I turned full geek mode today and began working on 19thsc.com and tinkering with my linux box aka Tombstone since I got back early afternoon.

Then, as I worked from 1pm to 4+pm, I felt mroe and more restless. More uncomfortable. Irritated. No idea where this source of uneasiness came from, I decided to go take a short break outside, drinking some water, nibbling on some tidbits.

At that moment, it hit me. It was the total silence.

My mom went out for her appointment, the two small kids were at school, my bro is in camp, my sis is in school.

Even the pets (Wyr the guinea pig, Titan the parrotlet and Birdy the budgie) were unusually silent. Damnit, even the neighbour's new puppy was silent.

No cars revving, no motorbikes screeching.

Nothing.

The silence was jamming its way right into all my senses, making my skin crawl and head spin aimlessly. I couldn't continue working. This was different from working at 2AM in the morning, where the silence is peaceful and conducive for work. This silence was intrusive and disturbing.

Once I got hold of the problem to the crappy feeling, I turned on the TV and the voice of the Channel 8 newscaster reporting on Thaksin just made everything so much better.

How interesting the same thing can have totally oppposite effects at different times.

Work Completed today:
- 19thsc.com Development Plan
- Walls of the room site
- and finally.. I got Tombstone onto the WWW!
(thx to emma, mz, ben for the countless "can you help me try this?")
(and to daphne for being the only one online and available at 3:30am to help me test this!)

Tombstone is born

Hey Tombstone (my new little Linux box running FC5) is born again! After that sad mishap regarding a smokin' hard disk.

The reinstallation was a good thing actually.. reformatted to better partitions, and the configurations took less than 15mins to do compared to the 2days previously. Learnt so much! hehe

So here's the breakdown:

Things I can do right now:

1) Allow users to FTP and access Tombstone to upload/download files 24/7.
2) Test my Flash/HTML/PHP scripts for the 19thsc.com webby
3) Access and control Tombstone remotely from any computer with SSH.

What I hope to be able to do soon:

1) Allow people to view the testing site through my external ip. Though I suspected Starhub has blocked my ports.
2) Setup a FTP account for people to share files in this huge public directory.

Ok that's all I've done today and very happy with it. Ben was the first to try accessing it and yep it works. If anyone for any reason might want to have an account can let me know, just to let you try it out =) though I'm not entirely sure about its usefulness.

To bed now, feeling good bout today =)

Wishlist: A new IDE hard disk drive.

I got to be the Suayest

finally got my web server of sorts up an running after configuring a million and one things and learning tons of new stuff poring through geeky documents.

THEN

bloody hell, my hard disk one started jamming and making clicking noises and then failed and smoke came out. Followed by the ominious burning smell. AHHH....

Good thing I've two hard disks on it and the Linux is installed on the 2nd one. So I just lost my windows 98 partition with 1 game on it. But I lost the MBR too.. sigh.. gotta fix it again.. I was gonna just leave it happily running after finishing configuring.. sigh.

What A Show

Couldnt fall asleep.. so ended up watching this late night chinese movie. Long late night post ahead. Please pardon grammatical and spelling errors.

The plot goes like this. A young married man and engaged woman met one day at this island (Lantau i think) in this rented place. They got attracted to each other, and ended up having an affair.

So the next day, the woman was pretty cool about it, but the man felt a bit guilty. However, they were so into each other they spent another day with each other before going back off to their own lives in Hongkong. Before they left, the man gave her one watch of a pair which he bought, to remember each other by.

From then on, they had an agreement each year to meet up at that exact rented place on the same day. The woman would use reasons such as going to the temple and the man would use work. Each time they meet they would engage in passionate love making, and updating each other on their current lives. And they enjoy this day so very much each time.

The story went from the 1970s all the way to late 1990s, and how each time they would support each other, whether one was having marriage problems, or doing badly in the business. Its interesting how much they love each other, and yet have another form of love and responsiblities to their spouses and children. In one scene the man even helped the woman's husband get her back anonymously. In this scene the woman asked the man to marry her, as she cant stand her husband anymore, but the man refused due to his wife and kids.

Towards the end, the man, who migrated to Canada but still comes back, proposed to the woman after his wife passed away (they were both bout 50+) The man's wife told him before she died that she'd already known bout the affair for the past 10 yrs, but held on for the family and kids. The decision to migrate was for him to forget the other woman. However, she said he should go to her after her death. The woman however is doing fine with her husband, and this time she rejected the man.

The old man then lied to the woman that he'd be going away forever, since she's not agreeing to marry her. The woman was devastated, and cried. The man then came in to confess, and said he's fine with them being the way they are.

The show ended with the old couple still loving as ever, on that same day, teasing each other abt balding and losing of teeth, before getting intimate.

--------------------------

So is it actually possible for someone to have a committment and a loved one already, but meet your "true love" and soulmate later on? And is the show just being idealistic. Having the best of both worlds for the protagonists, but if you actually think from the spouses' point of view, (which the show didnt show much of at all) you'd be pretty much screwed if your husband/wife has been running off to screw another person one day each year.

However, the situation would be solved, if the relationship was purely platonic and sex was not involved. The question is, then, if the absence of sex would allow for a deep relationship and connection as the couple had.

But the general feeling for the show was still much sweetness, a pinch of sadness, and a dash of morality issues.

Oh btw, anyone has any 2nd hand monitors in working condition they wanna part with?

Questioning

Can I get that done?
Well I should be able to.

Can I make that be a success?
Well I think I could.

Can I make that actually work?
Well I might be able to.

Are you sure you can do this.
Erm.. I hope I can.

Are you sure you are up to the task.
Erm.. I am not sure.

Are you sure you can see it through.
Erm.. I doubt so.

Can you do anything at all.
Sigh. I can't.

Does that not make you useless?
